On May 22, 1985, the 168 train blasts out of West Barstow headed from Cajon Pass with SDP40F 5264 in the lead. For the first few years after they purchased them from Amtrak, it was possible to find an SDP40F on the point of a train, however, crews didn't like the modified front pilot and steps. Even after substantial modification to the nose that finally improved the crew's ability to get aboard, these units didn't have too many leading assignments.
