The first Spirit of California, an overnight train down the California coast from Sacramento to Los Angeles, rolls through Jack London Square on October 22, 1981. F40PH's 240 and 235 lead the train, while Amtrak business car 10001 brings up the rear. The train actually didn't have a name at first; Amtrak ran a contest to name the train, thus the banner on the tail end of the train on the 10001.
