Finally ready to depart SP tracks and regain the Santa Fe main at Arrowhead Junction, the 991 passes the high masted triple signal that guards the junction at the bottom of the Mojave Yard. Like the BN B32-8's, these units were really fielded engineering prototypes for GE's Dash-8 product line, and after a couple of years were returned to GE. Date:

On May 22, 1985, the 168 train blasts out of West Barstow headed from Cajon Pass with SDP40F 5264 in the lead. For the first few years after they purchased them from Amtrak, it was possible to find an SDP40F on the point of a train, however, crews didn't like the modified front pilot and steps. Even after substantial modification to the nose that finally improved the crew's ability to get aboard, these units didn't have too many leading assignments. Date:
