March 5th, 1982 was busy day in West Oakland. First, checking the West Oakland Diesel Shop, SP passenger GP9E 3187 has slipped out of the shop in gray primer. The "Galloping Ghost," as I refered to it, is in the process of being repainted into the experimental Caltrain paint scheme. Even in the early eighties, it was possible to paint a locomotive out-of-doors in the Bay Area...couldn't do that today! Date:

In West Oakland, the UP 3204 shows off its rare small cab lettering. In the mid-70's, UP started using its big block lettering for its Union Pacific on the side of the locomotives. By 1982, many of its SD40's and older SD40-2's had made it back into the paint shop for the modification of their lettering, but 3204 was one the last hold-outs, at least for SD40-2's. Date:

On March 5th, 1982, we stop at 34th and Wood in Oakland to be sernaded by the Oakland Terminal's Baldwin 101. It is in the process of pumping up the air on a cut of cars that are on the tracks leading up towards 40th and San Pablo in Oakland. We're basically on the right of way that the Key System used to get its F-Line trains from 40th and San Pablo to the Bay Bridge by way of an underpass under the SP main. Of course, the OT used the old SP trestle that got the IER trains over the mainline and the "land-side" electric lines. Date:
