The Eastern Washington Gateway runs from Coulee City to Cheney, WA and hauls grain out the middle of Washington to the BNSF mainline. After getting a heads-up the night before of an eastbound leaving Coulee City, the EWG shuttle train finds the morning sunrise at Creston, WA with NIWX C40-8 9129, MRL SDP40 290, and WRIX SD40T-2 8702 in charge of 68 grain cars. After picking up 21 cars at the UP Yard, this job works through Kern Jct and out onto the main. The conductor has hopped off and is unlocking the switch for the east leg of the wye to the Buttonwllow Branch. CFNR 107 will then back the train onto the branch. Date:

Even after the sugar beet factory at Betteravia, CA closed, the Santa Maria Valley continues to operate, even if they don't have to deal with 100 car beet trains anymore. On March 5th, 1982, we stop at 34th and Wood in Oakland to be sernaded by the Oakland Terminal's Baldwin 101. It is in the process of pumping up the air on a cut of cars that are on the tracks leading up towards 40th and San Pablo in Oakland. We're basically on the right of way that the Key System used to get its F-Line trains from 40th and San Pablo to the Bay Bridge by way of an underpass under the SP main. Of course, the OT used the old SP trestle that got the IER trains over the mainline and the "land-side" electric lines. Date:
