The empty Oil Cans (ODOWP) come down through Santa Margarita in the late afternoon light of August 28, 2003. Power today is the increasing rare SP AC4400CW 203 and 114 along with UP 6357.
Another shot of SP 203 North at Santa Margarita.
In July 2003, there are still pockets of SP that haven't been completely wiped out by the massive capital investment of the UP. Here on July 3, 2003, the Guadalupe Switcher works it namesake home before going onto to the coke plant at Callendar. The local's power today is 7940 and 7666, showing some wear and tear, but still flying the fallen flag of the SP.
Solid SP painted lashups are becoming hard to come by 2002. Here an ILCOA roars through north Morgan Hill (timetable location of Berry) with SP SD40T-2 8571 and SD40R 7306 on January 11, 2002.
Friday, May 11, 2001 finds one of SP's 25 original SD70M's leading two of UP's soon to be 1000 SD70M's on a QRVMN. Seen here approaching East Garrison on the Coast Line with SP9809-UP4549-UP4046.
Very little looks like its changed on this sunny spring March 22, 2001. Two relatively rare birds on the former SP, GP40R SSW 7960 and GP40P-2 SP 7602 hold down the Hollister Local as they switch out cars at Luchessa, south of Gilroy.
At 2:40PM, March 16, 2001, former Rio Grande SD40T-2 5412, now in SP scarlet and gray, blasts through Camphora, CA with six mates and an 82 car train. The crew has just spent the past hour waiting for Amtrak at Soledad and is trying to make the long siding at Salinas before going on the law. Power is SP5412-UP6102-CNW6925-CNW6914-UP6041-SP8645-SP8699.
February 5, 2001 finds the power off the MWCOX pushing back into the Oxnard Yard. The majority of the cars off this train have just been pushed into the interchange tracks with the Ventura County Railway. Power is SP7365-UP3794-SP8634-SP7429-SP8316.
On November 22, 2000, a southbound blasts upgrade and around a curve between King City and San Lucas. Power today is SP SD70M 9824 and UP GP50 5534 and C40-8W 9417.
SP 7122 leads SP 4811 and UP 2561 on the Salinas Turn with nine cars south of Bradley on the Coast Line on August 24, 2000. This train has just dropped off a small string of oil cans at Wunpost in an unusual operation that occured while the Coast Line was out of service further south.
A northbound blasts past the grain silos of the Zacky Farms "chicken factory" at Traver on June 5th, 2000. Power is SSW9684-SP9803-SSW9642-UP3087-UP9384-UP9473.
A hot UP eastbound roars upgrade between Bena and Ilmon with former SP C44-9W 8164-8179-8135. June 5, 2000.
SP AC4400CW 174 leads UP6023 and SP164 on a southbound through San Miguel, CA on a bright May 19th, 2000.
February 14th, 2000 finds the Lompoc Local waiting at Guadalupe, CA for a northbound freight. This could be anytime in the past five years, with SP 4825 and 7611 having this local in charge.
The SD45 on the former SP had its last stand in 2000 and 2001. SP7478 leads SD40T-2 8327 on the East Flyer as it runs 72 hoppers downgrade on Ansel Hill towards Palmdale on January 10, 2000.
A hot UP eastbound roars past another train at the end of double track at Bena, CA on November 8, 1999.
An SP boat in the lead! SP B40-8 8035 leads UP engines 9207, 7533, and 7538 on a southbound stack train as it cruises through Madera, CA at sunset on October 18, 1999.
October 22, 1999 finds a southbound manifest train on the Coast Line with SP8171 leading 6795 and 63 cars at San Ardo.
Stunning roster shot of DRGW SD40T-2 5405 at San Luis Obispo, CA on April 25, 1999. Note that even at this late date, this unit still has its complete light package plus ditch lights.
And to go along with a clean DRGW 5405, there are four clean SP SD40-2M's. The entire lashup is DRGW5405-8642-8686-8646-8669. At San Luis Obispo, April 25, 1999.
SP SD70MAC 9809 waits for Amtrak #14 to pass at San Ardo, CA in glorious February 4, 1999 sunset light.
SP 8698 and two sisters wait their next call for the Cuesta Grade helper at San Luis Obispo. January 18, 1999.
